News Bowl |
| |
Weekly current events quiz game.
Every Monday morning News Bowlers will get practice sheets, then
once a week they will work in small groups for fun competition.
Competition is in a game form similar to Jeopardy; Rock, Paper
or Scissor Bowl; or Tic-Tac-Toe Bowl. The goal of the News Bowl
quiz program is to promote lifelong learning and to develop a
future voting citizenry. Monthly there is an online competition
which again, the kids can be divided into teams for and ranked
against teams from around the country in their age group.
Commitment would be on a monthly basis or a student could remain
on the team all year. Teams compete by grade level. |

Odyssey of the Mind |
| |
Students will work in teams to
problem-solve following the structure and rules of Odyssey of
the Mind. Running a successful OM program is contingent on the
support of parents interested and willing to act as coaches for
teams that are participating. |

Lego Robotics |
| |
Students can work in small groups
during the school day with a teacher, or during extended period
utilizing Mindstorms technology to build and program robots
using Legos. |

Safety Patrol |
| |
Fifth graders from each class will
participate in this group. A safety patrol code will be
established by teachers and students, along with an oath to
uphold the code. The students would patrol designated locations
at arrival and dismissal. Approximately once a month the patrol
will meet to discuss rules, how things are going and have some
updated training. Safety patrollers will wear the designated
orange belt to signify their status. Each student in the school
will fill out an evaluation of the safety patrollers and if a
patroller is not living up to the safety patrol cold, they can
lose their badge. |

PageTurners |
Fifth graders who are interested in learning the
"ins and outs" of creating a school newspaper will have the
opportunity to do so in this once a week club. Photography,
editorials, journalistic-style of writing, and interviewing are
just a few of the many different aspects that makeup a school
newspaper that each student will get an in-depth and hands-on
opportunity to learn about. |
