Message from the Principal |
|
April 2008 |
By Jeremy Palotti,

April and May will
prove to be exciting times for the students and staff of
Ellis B. Hyde Elementary School. With winter behind us,
students in the elementary school will certainly fill
their evenings with new sports practices and other
enjoyable outdoor activities. In addition to all of the
excitement that occurs daily in school, students also
will find themselves busy with preparing for the fourth
grade New York State science exam, seeing a visiting
author, enjoying the second book fair of the year,
preparing for their chorus concert, and going on field
trips to local museums.
On April 29th, fourth grade students will take the
written portion of the New York State Assessment in
science. Unlike the math and English and language arts
assessments, the science assessment has a lab practical
component which will be given on the days following the
written test. The lab practical assesses students’
ability to work through the scientific process through a
series of tasks. Like all assessments, we only ask our
students to try their very best and hope to create an
environment where students are confident in their
abilities and are not anxious. These assessments are
used to see how we as a district match up against our
State’s standards and gives us insight into areas of our
students excel in as well as areas where we need further
instruction.
Other exciting events happening at EBH during the next
two months begin with our visiting author on April 23rd.
Mary Jane Auch will be visiting EBH to speak to our
students about reading, writing, being an author as well
as sharing some of her work with our students. May 5 to
May 12 students will have an opportunity to purchase
books to read at home during our second book fair of the
year. This will be located in the EBH library and
students will be able to get some good deals on some
great reading materials. On May 20th, chorus members
will get a chance to showcase all of their talent during
their spring chorus concert. Parents, please be on the
lookout for specific times in your child’s Friday
folders.
At the end of April all parents of students that will be
entering the Elementary School for the 2008-2009 school
year will be receiving a letter explaining the class
placement process. Attached to this letter, parents will
also find an information sheet that parents can complete
and return back to school. This sheet will assist our
team in placing students based on what parents know
about their child as learners. The letter and form will
also be made available for parents on the Ellis B. Hyde
page of the District’s web page under Class Placement
Information. Parents that wish to complete this form,
please note that they need to be returned to the Main
Office of the elementary school by May 9th.
The Primary and Elementary School Parent Teacher
Organization is continuing to thrive and look for ways
they can impact Dansville and their students in a
positive way. If you would like more information on the
Primary School/ Elementary School PTO, please contact me
at 335-4030. The PTO and Student Council will be pairing
up on Friday, May 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm to host a
Friday Family Fun Night. There will be many activities
in the Primary School and High School for families to
take part in. Please look for more specific information
to come.
As we move along and the year begins to wind down,
remain on the lookout in your child’s Friday Folder, on
the District Web Site, and in other district
publications for further information about exciting
learning opportunities at EBH and throughout the
district. There are many exciting events that will be
occurring for EBH and Dansville students in the upcoming
months. As always, if you have a concern, question, or
are interested in seeking ways to help support learning
at EBH, feel free to contact me or your child’s teacher
at school.
