q Each day students will participate in academic instruction in these subjects: Math Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Our curriculum in fifth grade follows and is based on New York State Standards. The students are expected to do both group and independent work. They will be graded on their performance using rubrics, letter grades, as well as numerical grades.
q Homework will be given on a regular basis and the assignments will be recorded daily in their planners. I expect the children to complete their work, as homework is an essential part of the lesson and it provides the necessary practice/reinforcement on the skills taught. There will be a reduction of 10 points if the assignment is late. As always, if unexpected circumstances arise, please contact me.
q For some students, homework problems are a result of a lack of organization. Please take time to look over their planners and help reinforce the importance of staying organized.
q The class and myself spent time this past week developing citizenship rules for our classroom. I have posted these rules and discussed the consequences for inappropriate behavior. Also, we set personal goals for this year which we will revisit each month.
My philosophy as a teacher and parent is to create an atmosphere where each child in our room can learn and be successful. All students in our room will be accepted as individuals with great potential. I instill that we are a community of learners. Our room is a place where hard work equals success. To be successful students must feel comfortable taking chances. Without risk there is no chance for success.
