Overview of Career And Financial Management*:  The purpose of this new one-half unit course is to provide student with the opportunity to learn about the features of our economy, explore a variety of careers, learn the skills and competencies needed for success in the workplace and to begin to become financially literate.  Students will create a career portfolio; complete a checkbook simulation that entails maintaining checkbook records manually, then apply their skills learned by maintaining their checkbook on the computer utilizing the automated software program QuickBooks.                                                                            ½ unit

* The recently created course entitled "Career and Financial Management" is a one-half unit requirement that will replace the current Introduction to Occupations requirement in September 2004.  The course will be required as part of every career and technical education (CTE) program including five-unit CTE programs used as a substitution for the additional two units of foreign language needed for a Regents diploma with advanced designation. 

Class Materials:

The following items will be needed by the student and must be brought to class on a daily basis:

1.      Folder with pockets
2.      Pen and pencil
3.      Three ring binder for your portfolio

Attendance:

Good attendance is a must!  If you are legally absent, it is your responsibility to contact me the day you return to school, for any missed work.  Students absent the day of a quiz or test will have one (1) week to make arrangements with the teacher to complete the quiz or test.  If you know in advance that you will be missing a class due to a music lesson, club activity, sports activity, field trip, etc., you must see me before you miss the class to arrange a time to make-up any assignments in order to receive full credit.  Please make an effort to be on time for class.  If you are continually late to class without a late pass the following consequences will occur:

1st time late to class....................... warning
2nd time late to class....................... warning
3rd time late to class....................... you will receive a student behavioral referral

Expectations:

All students are expected to follow the codes of conduct as explained in the Dansville High School Student Handbook.  Less than expected behavior would result in the following consequences:

1st incident....................... warning
2nd incident....................... student/teacher conference
3rd incident....................... you will receive a student behavioral referral
4th incident....................... teacher/parent conference

Please note:  All procedures will be consistent with the Dansville High School Student Handbook.

Evaluation:

Individual marking period averages shall be determined as follows:

Class Activities & Participation, Homework            40%
Projects, Tests, Quizzes                                          60%

Assignments and Homework:

Completion of assignments and homework is expected.  The point value will vary from 10 to 100 points and will be announced at the time of the assignment.  Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class.  Students absent the day an assignment is due are expected to hand in the assignment the next day he/she returns to school, to receive full credit.  Homework assignments may be turned in late for reduced credit according to the following schedule:         

1st  school day late            75% of grade
2nd school day late........... 50% of grade
3rd school day late...........   0% of grade

Tests:

Tests are usually given at the end of a chapter, unit or category of material.  Each test is worth 100 points unless otherwise stipulated prior to announcing the test.  Students absent the day of a test will have one (1) week to make arrangements with the teacher to complete the test.  Failure to do so will result in a grade of 0%

Projects:

Throughout the year projects will be assigned.  A project may consist of a poster, career project, presentation, report related to assigned material, etc.  The amount of points counted for a project will be provided at the time the project is assigned.  The due date for the project will also be provided at the time the project is given. In addition, points may be assigned for rough draft and projects are broken into categories or specific assignment of points for each category.

Career & Financial Management à Course Topic Outline

Topic 1: Business Systems and Economics

This topic emphasizes the business and economic system including its characteristics, operations, structure, and evolving role within society.  Students should realize the significance of their part in the economic system.  Important management and economic concepts are defined in relation to business transactions and to the individual as an entrepreneur, employee, consumer, and citizen.

Topic 2:  Career Planning

This topic emphasizes the relationship between career planning and lifelong goals.  Students should recognize the skills needed for success in a chosen career cluster and know how to assess personal abilities and work performance to achieve individual career goals.  Key factors include understanding the changing nature of the workplace and the relationship of lifelong learning leading to career success.

Topic 3:  The Career Selection Process

This topic emphasizes the skills to be effective in searching for and selecting the appropriate career.  Students should become familiar with the job search process and the preparation and presentation of individual materials required to participate in the process.  During the process, students recognize interrelationships among the different career areas and identify realistic occupational choices.  Students also develop strategies to make an effective transition from education to career.

Topic 4:  Career Success

This topic is designed to increase student awareness of working conditions and important factors in employment benefits packages.   Students should make actual preparations for entering the workforce while developing skills in communication, critical thinking, and decision-making.

Topic 5:  Financial Literacy

This topic emphasizes economic decisions related to financial management.  Students will study a range of financial alternatives and explore basic decisions necessary to become informed employees, consumers, and citizens.  General principles will be combined with practical applications to develop personal financial literacy.
