Textbook:       Century 21 Computer Applications & Keyboarding, Seventh Edition

Century 21 Keyboarding & Information Processing, Sixth Edition

Course Description:

This one-half year course is designed to emphasize three major areas:

·        Keyboarding (manipulate skill development),

·        Formatting (arrangement, placement, and spacing of documents), and

·        Document processing (skilled production of letters, reports, tables, and other communication forms).

This course develops each of these skill components in a timely, educationally sound way.  Students will become accustomed to Office 2000, an integrated software package.  Students will also be introduced to technologically advanced applications such as the Internet.  Keyboarding is recognized today as a communication skill and a tool of literacy for everyone.  Research continues to point out that keyboarding is the most frequently used skill of office workers.  Learning the essential tool of keyboarding, will assist students in reaching the exiting standards, specifically, able to use and adapt to the changing technologies.

Class Materials:

The following items will be needed by the student and must be brought to class on a daily basis:

1.      Folder with pockets
2.      Pen or pencil

Attendance:

Good attendance is a must!  If you are legally absent, it is your responsibility to contact me the day you return to school, for any missed work.  Students absent the day of a graded task will have one (1) week to make arrangements with the teacher to complete the work missed.  If you know in advance that you will be missing a class due to a music lesson, club activity, sports activity, field trip, etc., you must see me before you miss the class to arrange a time to make-up any assignments in order to receive full credit.  Please make an effort to be on time for class.  If you are continually late to class without a late pass the following consequences will occur:

1st time late to class.................. warning
2nd time late to class................. warning
3rd time late to class................. you will receive a student behavioral referral

Expectations:

All students are expected to follow the codes of conduct as explained in the Dansville High School Student Handbook.  Less than expected behavior would result in the following consequences:

1st incident............................... warning
2nd incident.............................. student/teacher conference
3rd incident............................... you will receive a student behavioral referral
4th incident............................... teacher/parent conference

Evaluation:

Your final grade shall be determined as follows:

First marking period average................ 40%
Second marking period average........... 40%
Final exam........................................... 20%

Individual marking period averages shall be determined as follows:

Lessons............................................... 20%
Graded Tasks...................................... 80%

Graded tasks
are usually worth 100 points.  Tasks may consist of numerous items. The first semester tasks will include timings and reports.  After the keyboard is mastered graded tasks will include additional items such as letters, envelopes, memos, tables, numerated lists, and other applications.  Students may continually improve their grade by redoing graded tasks.  A student may practice or correct graded tasks and hand the item in to be graded.  If the item earns a higher grade than the original graded task, the higher grade will replace the lower one.  However, there is one very important stipulation.  The previous (original) graded document must be retained by the student and handed in with the improved task.  Therefore, it is very important to keep an organized folder with assignments and graded tasks.  A grading scale sheet is included with this package.

As a general rule, homework is usually not assigned, however practice is highly recommended.  Daily lessons completed during class time will contribute to 20% of each marking period grade.  Other items included with this category may include returning signed progress reports, organized folders, and other miscellaneous items.

Please note:  All procedures will be consistent with the Dansville High School Student Handbook.
