Course Introduction and Guidelines

Course Description: The study of American history covers a four hundred year period from the “European discovery” of the New World to the establishment of American “Democracy” and its development and emergence into the global arena. The United States is now the foremost superpower in the world. Its economics, political, and cultural influence are felt across the globe. Therefore, the study of American history is pertinent to understanding the complexities of the modern age, an age where American power is present in a number of areas.

 

Student Responsibilities and Prerequisites: United States History and Government, like is Global Studies counterpart, requires students to master a number of skills, skills essential to success in and out of school. These include the following objectives:

-Students will be required to write both thematic and DBQ(Document Based Questions)

-Students will be able to articulate oral arguments using historical evidence

-Students will partake in the joint English/Social Studies research project

 

   Student work must be turned in on time!!! NO EXCEPTION!! Unless given permission by instructor. All Quiz’s will be announced. Unit exams will be given on a periodic basis, every 4 to six weeks. And, remember, we are all here to learn so we must all work together to create a positive learning environment, one suitable for a diverse student body.

Absences: If for what ever reason you miss a class, its your responsibility, to make up missed assignments, et. You are all eleventh graders, essentially mature adults. Therefore, I will not hound you for late or incomplete work. You are accountable for your actions. It is a lesson you will learn or one you will struggle to manage.
