Computer Lab Expectations For Teachers and Students
A teacher’s role when bringing a class to the lab: During the time that a class is in the lab, the classroom teacher is expected to circulate, monitor, interact, help instruct, and supervise. If any discipline issues arise, it is up to the classroom teacher to support the TA’s decision on how the issue is handled. Computer programs will be used more effectively and inappropriate use will be minimized if the teacher maintains awareness of student activities.
Please enforce the following important rules. They were established to protect the equipment so that everything will be working for the next class or the next student who wishes to use a computer.
· Every student should stay in his/her assigned seat until the dismissal bell rings · Food and drink are not allowed in the lab · Backpacks are to be placed out of the way to prevent tripping and to avoid interfering with the network or electrical cables. · The TA will deliver printouts. We wish to avoid a confusing mass of people around the printer station. Mouse balls disappear and other problems occur when students are milling about.
The TA will take care of technical problems such as printer problems, difficulty in logging in, and distributing any peripherals. She will also back up teacher supervision of students.
Signing up for the labWhen signing up for the lab, the teacher will: · Submit a class list to the TA, who will ensure that all students have access · Provide an alternative assignment for any student who does not have Internet access, if the intended assignment requires Internet access · Submit a lesson plan to the TA if resource planning and assistance would be helpful · Let the TA know of any special needs, such as scanners, are planned for the lesson · Know the software well enough to prepare a lesson
Checking out computer accessories
Digital Camera: Teachers may obtain a digital camera from the TA. (You may e-mail your request in advance.) Batteries, an instruction manual, and hands-on instruction are also available. Teachers may allow students to use the camera, but the teacher assumes all responsibility for returning it in good condition or for paying for any repairs required if it is returned damaged.
Students using the computers during Learning Labs
In order to use a computer during a learning lab, students must: · Obtain in advance a pre-signed computer pass from the TA which specifically states the date and period the student may use the lab · Be in the lab before the tardy bell rings · Stay in their assigned seat throughout the period · Behavior: 1. If a student abuses the behavioral expectations during a learning lab in the computer lab, he/she will lose the opportunity to use those facilities during learning labs for the remainder of the month (if it’s more than half way through the month, the restriction lasts for the following month as well.) 2. Various consequences may be assigned for inappropriate use of technology. Punishments range from loss of Internet access to payment for actual damage to equipment to loss of access to any computer. |
