We introduce computer terms and parts of the computer so the students are able to identify and describe the major parts and functions of the computer. We stress computer care and safety. Students will be able to use equipment to enter, process, display and print information from various programs.
Kindergarten:
We orientate the new students to the lab by discussing computer lab rules, care and safety. Student start out with basic “point and click” mouse skills and gradually work up to “click and drag”. Kindergarteners will use various task keys on the keyboard, such as, enter, shift, esc and ctrl. The students manipulate various programs with concentration on math and reading skills, science, music, art, creative and critical thinking skills. The year is filled with fun, standards-based programs that allow the children have fun while they learn and enhance their knowledge of computers.
1st Grade:
We re-orientate the 1st grade students to the lab after summer vacation by reviewing computer lab rules, computer care and safety. The first grade students will manipulate various programs with concentration on math and reading skills. Science, music, art, creative and critical thinking skills are also taught at a higher, more challenging level, than that of kindergarten. They will learn how to save, open and close programs and files, as well as how to print various projects. First graders work independently and increase their abilities to prepare for second grade.
2nd Grade:
Second grade students will be able to use a variety of software to enter, process, save, open and close programs, display and communicate information, by using text, pictures and sound. Second graders are introduced to the “Home Row” on their computer keyboard. They will develop proper keyboarding skills throughout the year. Students will produce a slide show presentation that will incorporate creative thinking, creative writing, illustrations and keyboarding skills. Students will be able to use text and page formatting positions in a word processing document such as justification (right, left, center, full), fonts, size and style, when using Microsoft Word. They will use higher-level, standards-based programs to enhance their reading, math, science, music, and art, creative and critical thinking skills, throughout the year.
