Reading Expectations

Reading and writing times are our favorite times of the day! Our students are immersed in reading and writing in many ways throughout each day of the year. Various components of reading and writing are evaluated as the year progresses, and student samples are often saved to demonstrate growth and strategies they are using. Students are given running record assessments (leveled passages of stories) and sight word tests throughout the year. Running records are valuable at determining reading levels of students and for evaluating reading strategies being used. From this information, teachers are able to provide literature at a student's reading level in class and can help to teach new strategies. Our Primary School utilizes the Harcourt Reading series materials.

Students who are in First and Second Grade in Dansville Primary are expected to meet and are encouraged to become fluent with the following Reading Expectations:	All of our students are provided practice with the following reading strategies while reading at their instructional level:
* points to words when reading * recognizes differences between a letter and a word * identifies the use of a period * retells a story * sequences a story using pictures * demonstrates left to right direction for reading * uses phonetic skills to attack unknown words	* sounding words out (parts of words called chunking) and looking at the beginning, middle and end of the word * uses picture clues * saying blank, reading ahead, and then coming back to it * re-reading a passage to attempt the word again * is aware when something read does not make sense and attempts to self-correct * uses a variety of strategies to read above grade level materials
Reading Comprehension Expectation:
* retells a story and is able to answer who,    what, where, when, and why questions * reads with expression * reads with fluency * reads for information
