Reading Strategies You Can Do At Home!

When your child comes to a word that is not known, you could ...

• Start reading the beginning of the word, and then encourage them to read the middle and ending parts that they know.
• Look for little words inside big words ("chunking").
• Say, "Reread the sentence and think about what would make sense in the blank."
• Ask if their guess makes sense in the sentence.
• If your child is getting to a point of frustration, we recommend just telling your child the word.
