Reading & Writing Terms to Know |
Sustained Silent Reading (D.E.A.R. Time/F.R.E.D. Time, R.A.B.B.I.T.): Allotment of time within the school day for independent, self-selected reading.
Response Journals: Students write about and respond about books they read.
Language Experience Approach (LEA): Stories written from dictation by an individual student or produced by a whole class as a result of a shared experience.
Pattern Writing: Individual or whole-class stories written to the patterns of a book previously read.
Big Books: Stories in a large format written in natural and/or predictable language for use with groups of students.
Shard Reading: A story is read by the teacher and students together and discussed in a group setting.
Read Aloud: A story, often a chapter book, is read by the teacher to the students. Comprehension questions are asked of the students and discussion time follows each reading session.
Conferences: Teacher-to-students or student-to-student discussions about a specific reading or writing task or a group of related tasks.
Literature Circles: Students will be actively involved in reading a book and analyzing the literature in small groups. Each group will have a different book and students will have the choice of which group that they would like to participate in. The students engage in book discussions, often respond in response journals about the book and may engage in other projects (acting the story out, 3-D projects, etc..) or skill lessons related to the book.
