Fun
spelling activities you could use each week to practice your words at home
Try pouring sand, rice or oatmeal in a pan and have
your child spell the words by writing in the pan.
Try writing sentences using as many words from your
list as possible.
Use paint to spell the words and create a picture out
of the words.
Cut apart the spelling words and put them back together
like a puzzle.
Have your child use a typewriter or computer at home to
practice typing the spelling words. Kids love to use this and it helps them to
focus on the spelling, one letter at a time.
Using play dough, spell out the words and any words
that you can think of that rhyme. You could also roll out play dough and use
cookie cutters to spell out the words.
Use dry beans to spell out the words.
Using a cassette recorder, have your child record their
spelling words and play it back.
Using graph paper or other paper with grids, your child
could write the words inside the grids to create a word search.
First write the words on your paper. Using a stamp pad,
use a pencil eraser to make stamps in the shape of your words.
Write out the words and then trace each word with a
glue bottle. If you have glitter, you could sprinkle glitter onto the words.
If you d not have glitter, once the words dry, you could place clear
paper over the dried glue words and do a word rubbing. Just rub crayon over
the glue and your word will appear!
Fun
spelling activities to help review your words all year
Make your own spelling dictionary at home. Using a
notebook or other paper that you can put together at home, you can have your
child write their spelling words each week that they need to practice. Your
child then can keep this dictionary whenever they are writing at home to refer
to!
Instead of writing down the words, you could write them
on index cards and alphabetize the words each week in a special word box.
Little storage boxes would work great to keep your words from each week.
