DISTRICT APPOINTS MCGARRITY AS NEXT SUPERINTENDENT
November 7, 2006


The Dansville Central School Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Matthew McGarrity as the next superintendent of schools, pending a successful contract negotiation. The Board, during a special meeting on November 7, 2006 agreed unanimously to appoint Mr. McGarrity effective January 2, 2007.

Mr. McGarrity is currently the personnel director for the Corning-Painted Post School District managing about 1,100 employees and serving 5,600 students prek-12. Previous administrative positions include that of elementary principal, middle school principal, curriculum coordinator and staff developer. Mr. McGarrity’s teaching background includes alternative middle and high school science, and environmental science.

Mr. McGarrity earned a BS degree in education from SUNY Cortland, MSED degree in school administration from SUNY Brockport and has also completed coursework at Cornell and Harvard Universities. A resident of nearby Perkinsville, Mr. McGarrity is very active in youth athletics, serves as a volunteer in his church and chairs the United Way Campaign for the Corning City Schools. Mr. McGarrity and his wife Anne, a Wayland-Cohocton School teacher have two children, one in elementary and one in middle school.

Members of the Board of Education noted Mr. McGarrity’s record as an educator committed to children, their teachers, administrators, support staff members, parents and the broader school community as key factors in their selection. Board President Mary Ann Holden said, “The Board of Education is very pleased with the selection of Matthew McGarrity as our next superintendent of schools. Matt has an infectious energy for learning that he demonstrated throughout his interviews with the board and the stakeholder committees. His leadership style, organizational skills and vision for the Dansville Central School District made him as a consensus choice. We are all very excited about welcoming Matt and his family to our district and feel honored to be appointing a leader with a record of achievement and integrity.”

Mr. McGarrity was selected from a field that included 27 applicants in a search conducted by the Board of Education, Dr. Michael Glover, Dr. Gary Hammond and Jennifer Lewis of the Genesee Valley BOCES. The process included interviews with stakeholder committees made up of staff and faculty at all levels and from all areas, as well as students, parents and members of the community.
